AGRO CONSORTIUM (U) LIMITED, is a coalition of different private insurance companies offering agriculture insurance under the Uganda Agricultural Insurance Scheme (UAIS). The UAIS started at the start of Fiscal Year 2016/17, as a pilot scheme operating as a Public- Private Partnership (PPP) between the Government of Uganda and the private sector, largely to mitigate financial losses suffered by farmers in the course of agriculture production. A number of stakeholders consisting of government ministries, development agencies, financial institutions, parastatals, farmer apex federation and cooperatives among others actively participated in its set up.

To that end, under the scheme, the Government of Uganda has annually provided UGX 5 billion premium subsidy on agriculture insurance with a view of encouraging small and large scale farmers to buy agriculture insurance cover for their crops and livestock, in addition to attracting financing to agricultural enterprises.

Initially, the number of insurance companies forming the Agro Consortium was 10 (ten) and over the years, several non-life insurance companies expressed interest to join the consortium as agriculture insurers. Currently there are 13 non-life Insurance Companies and 1 Microinsurance company forming the consortium and the membership is still growing.
